A Really Portable Layout?

By stanford - Posted on 12 February 2010

As part of some content I am providing for an eBook provider, I had the idea of designing and building a HO scale micro layout in a suitcase. Talk about a challenge! It required a lot of thinking 'outside the square', and working out ways to make the layout interesting to operate while keeping costs down and having interesting scenery.

I finally settled on a track plan, which does not have any turnouts at all! But uses sector plates to change tracks. I had seen some interesting uses of sector plates on various internet sites that feature micro layouts and realized their potential for saving space!

The track plan allows for 2 visible industry spurs, a short two track 'yard', a 2 large industries, and some 'implied' industry spots (inside the buildings which have the sector plates).

Show be a lot of fun to build!
